“Moving the needle” is an English idiom that suggests something of noticeable difference or significant impact has occurred. Our 2015-2016 classes of Bio 285 Sophomore Seminar and Bio 485 Senior Seminar are embarking on Project-Based Learning activities to take the Spelman catch phrase “A choice to change the world” and make a needle moving change before the end of this academic year. In the posts to follow, you will see examples of Spelman Biology students 1) mentoring young girls in STEM subjects to encourage them to pursue science careers, 2) developing coping mechanisms for supporters of intimate partner violence, 3) holding seminars and focus groups to address gender and sexual inequality and stereotypes, and 4) more. Course leaders, Dr. Aditi Pai and Dr. Mark Lee, are excited about the transformation these students will experience (personally) and produce (locally).
