YOUTH CONSERVATION CORPS BIOLOGICAL RESEARCH INTERN

Position Description:

This internship will provide 3 Spelman College sophomore biology majors with exposure to the USDA Forest Service and Atlanta Botanical Garden. The interns will receive valuable on-the-job training and experience. Interns will have the opportunity to learn about conservation research through data collection and management, computer based research, conservation horticulture, GIS mapping, field training, and molecular biology. Specific duties will include, but are not limited to:

• Assisting researchers in the Garden's molecular lab on population genetics, and DNA Barcoding projects

• Participating in field work, partner meetings, and individual research projects for conservation related projects

• Assist Conservatory staff in conservation horticulture, mapping and plant records

• Research relevant topics on conservation using scientific journal articles and relevant web based resources

• Develop independent research project with written summary and either poster or presentation to Department and/or conference TBD

Qualifications:

• Ability to communicate (written and orally) effectively

• Detail-orientated, comfortable with data entry

• Ability to work independently

• Ability to work long field hours in Georgia summer

• Interest in conservation career preferred

Expectations:

• Partake in an eight-week internship (Summer 2018)

• Be a USDA FS Ambassador throughout the 2018-2019 school year

• Partake in a ten-week internship (Summer 2019)

• Meet the necessary requirements to receive a non-compete hiring certificate

• Gain the skills necessary to create a federal resume, compose a candidate profile on federal databases, and create search agents that will provide leads to federal positions
